Flooring Singapore: Types Of Flooring And How To Maintain Them

cleaning wood flooring

After spending a fair bit of money on installing beautiful flooring in your home, the last thing you want is for them to become dirty and damaged within a few years of moving in. In hot and humid Singapore where humidity levels can affect certain flooring materials, how should you clean and care for your flooring so that it can last till its maximum lifespan?

Vinyl & SPC Flooring

SPC flooring is a subset of vinyl flooring, and both of them are among the most popular flooring options in Singapore installed in many residential and commercial properties due to their durability and affordability.

To maintain the cleanliness of your SPC and vinyl flooring, simply vacuum it on a regular basis to remove any dust that has settled on the flooring. Cleaning up the dust will keep your floor clean and safe for you to walk on.

When vacuuming your floor, avoid using power rotary brush heads or any other attachment that could damage your floors. Instead, use soft brush attachments or a bare floor brush. Alternatively, you can use automatic robot cleaners because they are a lot more gentle.

Second, mopping your floor with a damp mop will help to remove dirt, sanitise it, and keep it looking clean. Avoid using dripping wet mops because water can seep through the gaps between the vinyl tiles and damage your floors or cause them to swell.

When mopping your floors, avoid using harsh abrasive cleaners, varnish, or oil-based products that can affect the texture of your floor and even damage it. Instead, use mild detergents and soft mop materials.

Also, avoid using sharp or abrasive objects on your SPC and vinyl flooring, and always clean up spills right away so they don’t stain or seep into the gaps between the vinyl tiles.

Wood Flooring

Wood flooring, specifically solid timber flooring, is another popular flooring material in Singapore that is commonly found in landed residential properties and commercial spaces. It is a beautiful and timeless flooring option that will last for decades if properly cared for.

An important part of preserving the beauty of wood flooring is to protect it from spills, scratches and other damages. Clean up any spills immediately and refrain from dragging heavy objects across your wood flooring. Although wood flooring is typically lacquered or oiled to protect it from stains and scratches, liquid can still soak into the wood and damage it when it’s left sitting on the wood for prolonged periods of time.

Cleaning your wood flooring is simple. Simply sweeping the surface with a soft bristle brush or vacuuming it will remove any dirt or dust on the surface. When vacuuming wood flooring, you must also use the appropriate attachments to prevent damage.

It is also advisable to mop your floor about once every week or whenever you notice any surface stains to keep it looking clean. We recommend using a microfibre mop and a mild detergent, or a special wood cleaner like Bona Wood Floor Spray Mop, to clean your wooden floor. Do not use a steam mop because it will damage the wood over time.

Occasionally sand and refinish your hardwood floor to revive and refresh it. This also improves its protection against spills, dirt and scratches.
